Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trusthandles around 60 percent of India’s containerized trade with its three container terminals, which have a combined capacity of over 4 million Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU).
The port handled a record 4.32 million TEU during the 2011-12 fiscal year. To cope with the expected rise of containerized trade in India, the port authority has undertaken a number of expansion and infrastructure projects, including the build of a fourth container terminal.
The port's upcoming fourth container terminal will add a further 4.8 million TEU to JNPT’s capacity, more than doubling the capacity of India’s largest deepsea container port.
However, the port is facing disruption in operation recently because of strike by union leaders. The strike is organised to protest against the delayed compensation packages for farmers that ceded their land for the port’s expansion.
